Perth rapper, songwriter, producer and poet, the enigmatic Mathas (Tom Mathieson) is Big Village’s first interstate artist. Mathas released his highly-anticipated sophomore album, Armwrestling Atlas, in October 2015 through Big Village Records and The Community Records, following his celebrated 10lb Hairless Sasquatch (2009). A highly personal project over five years, Armwrestling Atlas was produced, recorded and mixed principally by Mathas himself, who even hand-painted the album’s artwork. A brooding and frank exploration of relationships, loss and Australian identity, the album was praised critically, with Rolling Stone Magazine calling it “esoteric and densely lyrical” and “an impressive achievement.” Mathas was the first rap or electronic artist to win the WA Music Industry’s coveted “Song of the Year” award in 2013 for “Nourishment” featuring Abbie May, which was also amongst Triple J presenter Dom Alessio’s Top 10 tracks of the year. He won the 2012, 2013 and 2014 WAM Award for Urban Act of the Year and Triple J named Mathas one of their Next Crop Artists in 2015. The intricacy of his lyrics and self-made beats has captivated music lovers of all genres. Mathas is currently working on new material, after releasing the Bravo Troll EP in 2016, which featured collaborations with Trials (Funkoars) and Joelistics.
